About the Sunflower Community Resource Program

Vision

Community is empowered to act on their needs with the knowledge of and the means to access available resources.

Mission

Connecting community with information on resources; assistance in addressing barriers to access of resources; advocating for community when resources are not available.

Statement of Need

Children, youth and families experiencing needs/issues require information on various resources and clarity on the resources available to them. The community has experienced a number of changes that has created confusion about available resources. Because of the large demographic area, the Sturgeon region is served by a number of different boundaries for service. For example, Human Resources and Employment boundaries result in persons with the Sturgeon region being served by one of three different offices.

History

Driven by the needs and support of Sturgeon County, several municipalities identified the need to have community resources, programs and support information readily available to all of the Sturgeon Region. It was determined that the easiest, most effective method to distribute this information was to have a "one stop" information referral and resource program. A collaborative effort by members from various municipalities spent two years planning the program.

The first headquarters for the Sturgeon Sunflower program was located in the Bon Accord Community School. The program opened its doors February 10, 1997 and had its official launch June 17, 1997. The program moved to the current location, a building across from the Community Hall in Gibbons, on February 5, 2001 and opened its doors to the public on April 5, 2001.

The Sunflower Community Resource Program has continued to successfully operate and grow since that date.
